Differential MESS

I had very little diff fluid left when I changed my gear oil the other day. About 500 to 600 ml. And this picture shows what a mess it is under there. Is this just a seal issue or something bigger.

Probabaly a pinion seal. Looks a little rough though, has something hit the bottom of it? Hopefully its not cracked.

Looks like I ran over something. I have no memory of hitting anything significant. I guess I should clean it up a bit and look for cracks?

More than likely thats a seal leak, I have had one before, it comes out the front like that, you need new gaskets and fluid.

Any idea what the seal part number or description might be? It's not
33 10 7 510 289 - Rear Differential Output Shaft Seals (2 per car) is it?

Pinion seals on the rear differential really should not leak that much. You should have the vehicle looked ASAP. You may also have rear axle seals that leaking also. Do not drive the Liberty too long with low fluid. Rear differential carrier and pinion bearing are very expensive to replace. Rear pinion seals usually run about $130.00 or so. They are easily changed in about an hour.

Bump this, didn't want to start a new thread. I have the same exact problem (main input shaft leaking) and want to make sure I get the right seal. Is it #7 (part#33121213949) from the diagram in the above post?

Other items I will change:
1. Guibo since I will have to drop the prop shaft.
2. Diff bolts - swap out old fully threaded ones for new ones where the thread does not go up all the way to the hat.

Anything else I should look for? The output seals are not leaking so I don't want to touch them. Subframe was already welded.

I never pursued the seals. I just replaced the fluid. Now that it's warm weather, I need to take a look again and see what the level is, but it's on my list to replace the seals.
