Default Updated my MKIV nav firmware w/ v32 & custom splash screen

I just wanted to share this with you guys since I thought it was a huge improvement in modernizing the look of the nav drive. Not only does it look fantastic, but it can be done for free if you have the right stuff on your computer. Hands down probably the best navigation mod available.

The new version 32 firmware for the nav drive enables the MKIV dvd nav based drives to reading dual layer DVDs as well as loading voice files. It also allows for day/night mode selection(see images below).

I opted for a custom splash screen with a ///M logo. Not only does this make the nav look refreshed and a million times better than the OEM --BMW-- screen, I it personalizes the car as well.

The update process is very simple;

1. Unlock car, open the drivers door.

2. Open the trunk, and locate the nav computer and press the eject button on the drive.

3. Eject the map disc.

4. Switch ignition to position 1, leave door open.

5. Insert firmware disc into drive, follow instruction on nav screen. Be patient, it may take a minute to come up.

6. Wait (approx. 6 mins) till sat. nav asks to eject cd for reboot.

7. Go back to trunk and eject cd, if the CD/DVD has not already ejected itself.

8. Remove from drive.

9. Replace nav map disc.

10. Confirm reboot in car.

That completes the update..

*****Do not switch off ignition or close the door when doing the upgrade.*****

I wanted to thank John (ccfj1) for all of his help as well. He is the guy on xoutpost who has the answers to almost every question you can think of. He owns a e46 M3 and is on here as well.

For how to's, questions, nav firmware download sites, splash screens, etc. click here.

Here's a few images of the day/night modes as well as my splash screen. Sorry for the image quality, all the images are from an 7yr. old 3.2MP "special". My nice camera must have ended up in the Christmas garbage pile or been dbo'd by the Cringle because it has gone missing.

*Oh and before everyone asks, day/night mode must be manually toggled to through the settings menu. The light sensor on the nav unit has not yet been tied into the firmware to do this for you automatically.

Day mode.

Night mode.

Splash screen (///M logo w/ CF backround and Nürburgring image).

(Image doesn't look perfectly crisp because of the camera, its perfect in real life.)

Is this firmware good for a 2003 M3 with Split screen nav? IF so what do I need besides upgrading the system. Do I need additional disks or anything like that?

There are several versions of the v32 firmware floating around w/ various splash screens. On the above link, if you click on the "custom splash screens only" sticky, there are literally hundreds of options.

You can directly modify the screens and almost any of the nav colors, splash screen, etc. with the proper programs, info here.

Not sure what you mean by split screen nav? With a 2003 you should have the 16:9 ratio screen if I am not mistaken and the split screen is an settings option. What drive version do you have(more than likely MKIV- DVD based or MKIII CD-based)

MKIV DVD based drive

IIRC from the xoutpost discussion, V31/V32 doesn't add anything for MkIV and earlier systems. Just a couple of bug fixes for the newer NAV computers.

I've had V32 in my car for several months. I didn't notice any improvement over the many other versions prior to it. Also, night mode has some limitations. It's nice to impress someone with the night mode, but it's very impractical. Street names still can't be seen at times (even though this was supposedly corrected with white lettering).
