Default Euro S50

This is probably a dumb question but can the Euro S50 be coupled to the US automatic M3, if not why?

not sure how it would match up to the auto tranny...more importantly, why would you want to do all that work and keep an auto tranny in the car?

Since the the US and EURO S50b30's are based on the same block they should bolt up. I don't believe BMW produced any euro spec M3's with the automatic transmission so you'd be breaking new ground as far as setting up the electronics. I believe the much maligned SMG I was an option on the later euro cars. That was the European "automatic."

I don't doubt it's possible with enough money and time thrown at it. Hell there's a kid from MIT that turned his 323 into an E46 M3 sedan...

That said you are probably better off modding your S50 with full bolt ons. Turner, Bimmerworld and others sell full kits. It will cost you a lot less money for the same if not better performance as the euro engine.

haha good sport...honestly I'm not sure. But if the US engine bolts up to both manual and auto transmissions, and the Euro S50 bolts up to a US manual transmission, then I would assume you could get the Euro S50 to bolt up to the US auto transmission as well.

Now, what I would do is find a car in good shape w/ a shot motor for cheap (I know a guy that's selling his '95 for a little over $2k with a blown motor here in Denver) and perform the swap into it...

Default Euro in front of an automatic

Bolt up yes, work, no.

SMG I came on Euro 3.2 cars, but it was not considered a wonderful item, though it worked.

No automatic M3 euros exist in the sense we consider an automatic.

Had a local customer who wanted me to bring in a full SMG kit for them for their E36. Very nice guy, handicapped, and it "sorta" made sense given his blown engine...

But, in the big picture, to get it to work financially and timewise, he was far better off selling the chassis, and buying a used E46 M3 SMG....

Helpful?

I have a S50B32 and I think it only works with SMG gearbox (and with the manual transmission, obviously).

I appreciate all the help guys, I have an e46 m3 as well and this was going to be a cheap side project. Really wanted a sleeper since my e36 is a sedan but given the large amounts of money I would have to throw at it I guess Im better off with bolt ons and a supercharger. Having said that, do you guys thing the S54 could fit on the stock e36 engine mounts?

The S54 will definitely fit, but to get it to work you are either going to need all the harnesses from an S54 M-coupe or roadster, or do stand alone engine management designed for a racecar. Either way is going to be very expensive, and with Standalone engine management you won't have stuff like ABS work.

Once you go through all that trouble you might as well do an LS1 swap. You can buy full crate packages from GM including engine management and CA component emissions systems. I wonder if a GM auto trans will fit in an E36? There is forum on BFC that covers engine swaps.

Might want to talk to this guy. His buddy is planning to drop a GM V8 and auto trans into an E36 sedan.
