another vote for the Gen III on stock headers/stock midpipes...
essentially completely stock sounding at idle, and moderate gas input. Once you want to stomp on it, it does wake up though |

The Strömung isn't quiet. But I do find the sound somewhat refined now that I've abandoned the whole OEM NVH criterion that once weighed on me heavily. Interestingly enough--as I mentioned in my "shorty" headers thread--the Strömung became even smoother ("quieter?") once the headers were installed.
If you can put up with a bit more noise, I'd say the Strömung is one of the premier exhausts for this car. It's inexpensive ($500-something), looks great, is one of the lightest on the market, fitment is dead on, and (despite the foreign-sounding moniker) it's manufactured here in the good ol' USA. Cons (at least in your case) include a bit more aggressive tone and the tips, while "stainless," do rust. The rust is easy to remove with metal polish but it's kind of a bummer. But hey...at a third of the cost of the SuperSprint "street" (i.e., not "race") version--which is widely regarded as the sophisticated "gentleman's aftermarket exhaust" for the E36 M3--the Stömung comes as close to the "ideal" as you're going to find. ![]()

I would also agree the AA Gen III stock headers and mid pipes. Even with the headers and mid pipe you have to be on it to make it loud around town sounds good slight louder then stock

I like my Dinan, and by aftermarket standards its on the quiet side. Best part is, first owner bought it.

I am not a fan of an overly loud exhaust for a DD, I have a Borla and I don't think it is obnoxious at all. That being said if I was going to do it again I would go with either Stromung or AA gen III. I think I would prefer the AA but the Stromung has staggered tips like a stock muffler. Dinan is nice but at $1100............. pass.

Nothing wrong with stock, but for quiet I'd go AA III in a heartbeat

The consensus seems to be AA III but after listening to the video it sounds similar to what i have. I'm still undecided. Thanks for the opinions.
