Hilarious. It's such a con.

I had a dealer quote me $275 to mount and balance 4 tires. Had an independant shop (which did a spectacular job) do it for $81.

Dealer quoted over $2k for a new front caliper and new rotors and pads. Rebuilt the caliper myself and put the rotors and pads on myself for $450. Granted it took some research and a bit of elbow grease.

I understand that dealers have a lot of overhead to support, and they do provide a critical service (selling the new BMWs). Cost effective for out of warranty work they are not.

During my recent VANOS woes I took HerrSMiG in for the coil warranty. The SA refused to look at my VANOS at all, and said I had bad gas.

Finally replaced all of the coils and no change. He wanted to drop and flush the tank, and replace the filter and sending unit, to the tune of $1K. Then he tells me "we want to start there".

Needless to say, about 5 minutes later he was no longer my SA, all my stuff now goes straight through the SM. He drained the tank and gave me a couple of cans of additive for no charge (they still didn't want to consider that it could be anything VANOS-related) and recommended I change the fuel filter and drive around for a week or two and "it should clear up".

Nope. Ordered a new VANOS solenoid from Tischer, installed in about 10 mins, in the parking lot at work, and all is wonderful agin.

If I wanted to get back into mechanics I'd ask for a job there.

I'm with you on this one ( I paid a lot less for the seals though)

Buy the drive belts yourself from Pelican for $50 shipped, and do them yourself. It only takes 10 mins.

Well I wouldn't say 10 mins but they're not difficult at all

i'm annoyed with my service department

I go to Greenwich BMW service in Portchester, NY. My service guy is a nice guy but the service overall is outrageous. I have brought my car in for one problem, only to find out something else is wrong or I have to come in a week later for a new problem after the car was being serviced.

My car went in for an inspection and when I come to get the car, my door trim was hanging off. They told me that the car came in that way.

If my door trim was hanging off, I think I would of said something to fix it.

I ended up getting that fixed and while the car was there for a issue with my air conditioning, one of my tails went out. Ridiculous how these dealerships work. My family is a lexus family and while they at times can rape my family, it is nowhere near as bad as BMW has tried to do to me over these past few years.

My car is at the stealership right now for an AC problem, I am waiting for my service adviser to call and tell me that it will be like $2000. I am hoping it is smaller but I am bracing for the worse. If it turns out to be extreme, then I will just be buying the parts and bringing it to my local mechanic. I am out of warranty at this point.

Speaking of which, my mechanic has never worked on my car. Anyone got any recommendations for a good trustworthy mechanic in the new york area???
