Quick search:

"Swedish inventor, Nils Bohlin invented the three-point seat belt - not the first but the modern seatbelt - now a standard safety device in most cars. Nils Bohlin's lap-and-shoulder belt was introduced by Volvo in 1959." - from About.com

"Volvo introduced the first production three-point belt in 1959.[1] The first car with three point belt was a Volvo PV 544 that was delivered to a dealer in Kristianstad on August 13, 1959. The three point belt was developed by Nils Bohlin who had earlier also worked on ejection seats at Saab." - from Wikipedia (I know, not the greatest source)

It says that in 1965, three-point seat belts were fitted for the first time. Doesn't necessarily mean they were the first ones in the world to do so. Looks like Volvo had them beat by 6 years.

Interesting.... Thanks for the info

I guess it was pre-tensioners which MB pioneered

Quote:
In 1981, Mercedes-Benz improved the design by adding pre-crash tensioners. Within milliseconds, seat belt pre-tensioners tighten safety belts and help prevent belted occupants from sliding and bouncing around during a crash. Six years later, Mercedes-Benz, along with Audi, also added shoulder belt height adjusters to provide a tighter fit.

Today, seat belts are recognized as a passenger's primary line of defense. According to the U.S. National Highway Safety Transportation Agency (NHSTA), lap/shoulder belts, when used properly, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45 percent, and the the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent.

Let's hope that the ejection seat work was in the airplane dept.

I really hope I never have to own a car that has any of the following:

- Automatic cruise control
- Lane-departure warning / correction
- Automatic braking
- Automatic parallel parking
- Ejection seats (actually those would be kind of sweet!)

The best "safety measure" is a driver that doesn't completely suck. However, with all of the "convenience" features like internet in cars nowadays, we probably need all of the active safety stuff. I'd much rather be on the road next to a guy that was paying attention after having a few beers than someone trying to write emails while talking on a hands-free phone...

That's not really fair. Lexus never advertised it that way. It was meant for parallel parking only, which they obviously didn't do.
