Default Tire Mounting Woes

Yesterday I made an appointment with a local tire shop (www.telletire.com) to get my rear tires replaced before I head out on a roadtrip this friday(I have the tires, just needed them mounted and swapped out with the old ones). I've been to this shop before with my Cobra, but just to be sure when I called I said "Will your tire machine scratch my wheels? If it will, I certainly don't mind going elsewhere." The guy from the shop on the phone quickly said "no, we do 19 in rims all the time," he even mention he has mounted 24 in rims/tires . Anyways I go to the shop and the salesman even mentions that his notes attached to my appointment mentions to be careful of scratching the wheels. At this point I felt confident about their service.... let's fast forward 15 minutes when the manager enters the waiting room and says "well we did it." Sure enough they scratched the lip of my oem csl wheel about 70% of the circumference of the rim. I told them don't even touch the other rim. This was around 5pm and their wheel refinishing "go to" shop was close.

At this point, I am waiting to hear back from them this morning, but in the mean time, what would you guys do? He asked if we could put the spare tire on for a couple days while it gets fixed.... 1. NO SPARE in the M3 2. I'm getting my tires changed in order to go on a roadtrip 3. He said they can't get me a rental car while they try to fix this before Friday at 4pm (when I'm leaving on said roadtrip)

You can't give them an impossible quandary - in other words, it sounds like they will fix your rim, but you have to let them have it to fix it.

Make an appointment with them to have the rim fixed next week or whenever you return from the road-trip. See if they can provide you a loaner if you have no other transportation while it's being fixed.

Shift happens - the shop is owning up to it. If you work with them you'll have a satisfactory solution.. if you make it hard for them - it's gonna be less satisfactory for sure.

Exactly why I wasn't an a$$hole about it. Just annoying that they aren't going to give me a loaner since they messed up something so simple. I wonder if they would have been this cooperative if I didn't mention scratching my rim with the initial phone call?

I agree with the response you got.. but that is frustrating had the same thing happen to me except it was all 4! Fortunately for me they did pay to have them fixed.

I am glad he stopped after the first one, it would have been just plain dumb for them to give it another try... they blamed in on their machine lol

Are these rims/tires that hard to mount? Seeing that I'm not the only one...

Doesn't help you now but for future reference,Autotire in St Peters,MO is excellent. The manager,Keith Emery is a BMWCCA guy and DE instructor. Lots of satisfied customers in the STL area, including me. Also,as Don says, stuff happens, and is a known risk when mounting very low profile tires on large diameter rims. Good luck and hope it works out to your satisfaction.

Do you know anywhere in STL that I can get the rim refinished?

From now on I'll be going there. Autohaus BMW said they won't mount any tire that wasn't purchased from them. My buddy from school's (he also drives an M6) family owns Dobbs Tire. I phoned him and he called and set me up with an appointment today so I can get on the road tomorrow.

Not sure about the refinishing. You might check the BMWCCA St Louis website and see if there are any recommendations there. www.stlbmwcca.org
