It just has to barely touch the surface and the glass collapses. I am surprised that the news channel did not know this. Thieves in LA do this all the time. Easy to conceal unlike a hammer, is quiet, and it works every time. I have had this happen to me mutiple times, it sucks because there is nothing that you can do about it, not even tint or BMW "safety" glass. Simply take out the plug touch the window or toss the ceramic at it, and Voila! broken window.
