Default Cheapest way to get a new key.

Does anyone know the cheapest way to get a new BMW key made?
The best deal I've found is $60 plus tax. You have to go in person with the car and current registration. They order the key and call you when it's ready.
Can anyone beat that deal or have a better idea?
Thanks in advance.

I really didn't think anybody but BMW could do it. How are the aftermarket locksmiths getting around the EWS?

The cheapest and only way is to go to the dealer and order the spare key. The one with the plastic head and bmw logo. It should not be more than $60. You do not need to bring your car to the dealer. The only things they need is current registration of the vehicle and the owner driver license. You will pay for the key and they will order it. The dealer will not cut the key on the spot because they do not have the equipment. Once they order the key, it takes only one business day to get it. Basically you should get it next day. After that there are no procedures. Key is ready to work for the vehicle it was ordered.

+1

$60 is a bargain compared with what a locksmith would charge you.

Not my experience a couple months ago....needed a new key, daughter lost mine so I went to local BMW dealer. Yep, they want registration, DL AND the car. Claimed they could not match codes in the key to the car without both present. And the key itself was $110....+ charge to make the key + labor to match the codes...said it would be a bit over $200. Guy at parts dept says BMWNA audits them regularly to ensure they are following this.

Solution ended up being...as the car needed to get to a shop due to my expansion tank exploding...a mobile locksmith. Had a local indie shop lined up when the tow truck showed up but after my visit to the dealer told him the car needed to be taken there first for a key. Tow driver recommended I call AAA for mobile locksmith. Guy came out, fitted a key then took about 30 minutes for his device to set up the code. Cost was $60. Also told me I could take that key to their shop and they would make spares for $30. Sure, it wasn't a BMW key and no light but that's what the alarm remote is for.

And, 1 week later my daughter found the old key...

BS.

BMW keeps a couple (four?) extra keys for your car in Germany that are already coded. You can order them, iirc its about $60 for the key without the light and around $120 for one with.

Once you burn through those, you must replace all the locks/ignition in the car.

I thought BMWNA kept our spare coded keys in Jersey.

Ace/True value. They can do coded keys, not sure what the cost is though.

What about the alarm system? I know this isn't 100% related, but figured this thread is similar enough. I have a 95 and my dog happened to chew up my 3-button OEM BMW alarm and I just use my key now. Any help would be appreciated!
