how much weight will the new engine add/subtract? just wondering how the new engine will affect the balance of the car.

Putting the S54's stock Cams back in, retuning the cam position and VANOS timing

I was going to go into detail on the VANOS and stock Cam install but I this being my first S54 build I focused soley on what I was doing and forgot all about pictures and writing notes.

Those that have installed cams/vanos know what goes in between and how sensitive you need to be torquing everything back down. I did NOT want to make a mistake or drop a washer. This project is wayyy off time and I'm just happy to be this far, engine needs 2 new studs (broke or loose during previous owners un-install of cams).

Needs new spark plugs, coil packs, and a oil change till she can run. Engine is scheduled to go in for machining next week, a week after that I have secured 2 weeks of lift time to drop and wire the engine in.

Not enough to ruin the balance of the E36, remember the euros engine was nearly the same weight as a S54, so the car is designed for a heavier front end.

Plus the carbon fiber cover saves about 300 pounds of weight ;D

As a few of you know, I have undergone a massive transformation of my 1998 E36 M3. From day 1 it has been my plan to swap out the S52 with a S54, after 6 months of ownership and research the swap just around the corner.

I was able to acquire a S54 from a 2006 E46 Kinetechnik stage 2 M3 that was swapped out and replaced with a S85 V10. There are a few more parts I am waiting on next week (drive shaft, radiator) but those can wait until the engine is at least in.

Pictures to be uploaded very soon, come Monday the E36 is dropped off and a painful week of waiting and working begins. Also need to put a few calls in to some sponsors (UUC ) who have done the swap the way I plan to do it and get some info! Anyone that has done the Z3 wiring harness way please chime in and I hope you don't mind If I PM or email!

Chasen G.

UPDATE 8/11

#1 This swap is not for the budget minded. You must enter this project with no budget in mind and have at least a few grand laying around.

What you will need/modify:

Mechanical:
-Drive shaft (either modify the E36, or splice the E46 drive shaft with the E36)
e36 m3 evo driveshaft will bolt right up.
-Front cross member (still looking into making a custom piece or modifying the e36 or 46
The stock e36 cross member needs no modification for an s54 swap other than reinforcement of the mounting points.
-Radiator (still researching what I can do but as is I have a new E46 and a new e36)
E36 radiator will work fine for the S54 swap we used an all aluminum unit designated for an e36 m3.
-Fan (looking to see if I can use electric)
an upgraded pusher fan can be installed in the stock location in front of the condenser. no mechanical fan is required.
-Fuel pump/fuel lines (under research)
e36 m3 evo fuel pump will supply the motor fine and bolts into the standard e36 fueltank. The S54 fuel filter has a built in regulator and the return is plumbed from the filter back to the tank.
-Oil Pan (looking to see if can use the E34 5 or S54 which im trying to get from the shop that I left the engine at)
Stock s54 oilpan and oilpump can remain unaltered. They fit well with the stock crossmember.
-Oil pump (researching)
Not needed use the donor s54's stock pump
-Header (Stepped or authentic CSL I can have mailed to me from the DELAGE facility in France)
-Cross member Transmission
e36 m3 evo cross member bolts right up to the 6 speed.

Electrical
-Wheel speed sensors (looking into deleting the need for this, although I may just do the swap)
-Traction control (looking to just delete, you can always go back and add DSC)
-ABS (researching)

Also need to test the fitment of the DELAGE Sport Airbox, obviously need to wait until the engine is in.

Update #2
Bought these today for the swap:
E46 Sub frame
E46 Drive shaft
E46 Radiator
I felt the need to come correct this information b/c others are finding it via google and it is mis-informing them as to what is actually required for the s54 swap mechanically.

Thanks,

Erik

Question Iam doing e36 s54 swap with 6 spd getrag

buddy! do you mean that the e36 m3 evo(manual 6spd) driveshaft can directly fit to the 6speed tranny for the e46 m3.

I am doing the same project to my e36 and I totally depend on your advise.
thank you for your great help.
