Default New NASA Rocket Produces 3.6 million lbs of thrust - Vid Inside

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLDwH...layer_embedded

Quote:
NASA's DM-2 rocket motor successfully fired for two minutes this week, pumping out a massive cloud of smoke while technicians carried out their tests. The first test is... are their earplugs in tight enough to block out the incredible noise?

Prior to the firing at the ATK Aerospace Systems facility in Promontory, Utah, the engine was chilled to minus 40 degrees, to allow for additional tests on the stresses generated. Eventually it'll pump out 3.6 million pounds of thrust.
Goodness.

Can anyone explain to me how that thing is tethered to the earth? Ignition of the rocket at 1:20 is epic.

That's the same test range used by the company that builds the SRB's for the Shuttle out in Brigham, Utah. IIRC, The rockets are mounted against a gigantic steel reinforced chunk of concrete that is buried in the side of a mountain. It's the mountain that offers the resistance.

The only thing keeping it in place is a GT-R accelerating in the opposite direction.
