Either that or his momma fed him paint chips..

J/K of course...

The only real horror stories I ever really heard of for these cars are cars with DCT.

Any word back on this yet?
Be interesting to hear what the feedback is as we have a tonne of M-DCT issues and not many MT.

A reluctant 1-2 shift is a common complaint (look over on M3Post - lots of talk about it). Check your service records and make sure your trans oil was changed at 1200 miles (some dealers seem to be confused about this because the DCT doesn't require an oil change, but your 6mt does). Also, you want the trans oil changed every 30K miles after the 1200 mile initial change.

As others have said, you should definitely complain to your dealer about the grinding.

If the noise from the rear you're describing occurs while you are making a low speed tight turn, that is a common (not harmfull) differential noise. BMW has a special diff fluid that will make the noise go away, but they run hot and cold about putting it in.

Sorry buddy but I spent $3500 on a used BMW transmission with 35,000 km from canada. I was quoted $8500 for the repair at a local bmw dealership. Don't take to aamco or a local transmission place. You can not repair these transmissions. Believe me no one will work on these. Mine did the same thing would grind going into first and would get stuck in gear. (syncros were shot) While you are at it replace your clutch and flywheel because they are likely why your transmission was damaged. Sorry about the bad news....... : (

If you're out of warranty and BMW won't help, the BMW NA MSRP on the 6spd is $5616.25. You can get it from Tischer BMW for $4493.00.
