I presume you're talking about Rotella T6 5w-40. Correct me if I'm wrong (there's more than one kind of Rotella).

Great stuff. Made for diesels but works for gas engines, and apparently uses some pretty modern tech.

Would I use it in my car? No. It's entirely possible that Rotella T6 beats a lot of the available options, and you will certainly find people who will say so (although you should try asking them to back up that statement). But I've never seen anything proven, so I don't see the point of going with a diesel oil -- especially when there are so many excellent options that carry OEM approvals or are at least specced primarily for gas engines.

I was using the BMW 5w30 for a while and had no problems. They let me have it with my CCA discount, although they aren't supposed to do that for oil.

FYI for Mobil1 buyers: Advance Auto Parts is having a Mobil1 special, at least here in NJ. $32.99 for 5 quarts of any Mobil1 and includes any Mobil1 oil filter up to $12.99. I took the deal with any random filter, store-credited the filter for -$12.99, added 2 more quarts of the M1 0w40 for $15.98 and was on my way with 7 quarts for $38.50 including tax. The mgr on duty saw no argument with this scheme...

Most of my service history from POs shows 5w30, sometimes specified as Mobil1, sometimes just 5w30. One PO was running 15w50 (again unspecified brand) for a spring and summer, and I believe he was tracking the car to some extent.

Actually I wouldn't mind seeing that. I suspect that 5w-30 and 10w-30 would be okay for non-race, non-hot-climate-in-summer use.

Anyone want to try an oil specifically designed to have a lower HTHS viscosity than the BMW's minimum requirement, several times, and shell out for a $60 oil analysis each time?
