Ok, I'll bite...

On my flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles last week (Boeing 777-300ER) we burned 32,000 gallons of fuel. Sounds like a lot, but... We carried 283 passengers and 20 crew for a total of 303 people 7400 statute miles. So that is 106 gallons per person which works out to 69.8 mpg per person!

So that's like each person driving a 70 mpg car solo or, if you like, two people car pooling in a 35 mpg car. Of course you can't drive ANY car across the Pacific Ocean. Oh, and we averaged 620 miles per hour. If you ask me that's pretty damned efficient mode of transportation!
