Default Running Catless with no Tune

Ok so for quite a wile I've talking about running catless with no tune and no SES light on. Well that was because I never took the car out of my region but only drove it arround my area (same altitude).
Recently I just got done with a 1300 mile trip and did it again 2 weeks later so 2600 miles total. From 4000 altitude down to 2000 and back. Drove through 80 degrees weather, 32 degrees weather, 500 miles of hardcore rain and snow also. It threw the cat ineficiency code (post cat O2) and the rich code (too much fuel). Also The best mileage I got on the highway was on 20.8 mpg so yeah a tune would be really good.
So if youre not running cats get a TUNE. Just FIY

Crap.. I'm going catless this weekend and was planning on not getting a tune since I don't want to pay for a generic one.

Unless I know what the tune does, I will not get any. And since no tuner will tell you what you are paying $500 for, I refuse to pay.

I doubt they do anything at all other than turn of the light. BUT - you will still get codes thrown. $45 emulator is much cheaper.

I'm the same way. Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any really good M3 tuners in my area.

What do you mean by emulator? did you mean simulators?

Finally someone that makes sense. hahaha

I have been driving catless for the last 3 years without a tune. no issues here. Did you not expect to get a CEL without cats? Cause if you didn't thats just plain silly.

It is a night and day difference in power and power delivery. Not to mentioned ESS nailed the throttle mapping.

I do understand you wanting to know exactly what they are doing to your ECU, but rest assured, they 100% free up more HP. IMO, that's not even debate-able. I did 3 mods that made my car noticeably faster; 4.10's, headers, and tune. That is also the order in which I installed each mod.

I beg to differ, a difference in throttle mapping doesn't mean added HP.

I spoke to a few people regarding the tune and they tell me nothing notoiceable in HP but more in throttle mapping improvements.

Here's a pretty good apples-to-apples dyno comparison thread: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=339596

OP, what codes is your car throwing? I'm running catless but not getting cat efficiency codes...my car is throwing lean/rich codes P0153 and P0175. It also threw code P1179 but has since cleared itself of this code. The weird thing about my car is the SES light will illuminate and then turn off after a few days of driving, stay off for a few days, and then turn back on. Are you having similar problems?

I discussed the added hp and the throttle mapping as 2 separate things. The added hp is significant whenever you initially install the ECU again. It only gets faster over the next couple hundred miles. Unless you have the ESS tune or have driven one with an ESS tune, you are not going to believe me or understand what I am saying. It is a very significant difference.

If you don't want to believe it, that's fine, but it is 100% there.
