Just curious, we know M cars require inspections 1/2 getting up to $800-$2000 per inspection at the dealer, plus the brakes, and all other parts associated with M is going to be much higher.
So what about AMGs? I am not familiar with them in terms of maintenance needs. Do they require inspections, I know they have like B1,B2 services but anything AMG specific? Which in-house tuner would be more expensive to keep in the long run? IE, parts, oil, repairs, etc...

Is this your first foray into the world of high performance cars? It can be a little shocking the first time that you have to fix something. Go through the stickies at the top of the forum to get a good picture of some of the things you're going to run into with an ///M3.
If you are worried about the cost of ownership and maintenance over the return in driving experience, I would suggest staying away from ///M cars, AMG, AudiSport, etc. They are always going to require a little more maintenance than standard models and their American- and Asian-made counterparts. Parts will also be a little more expensive as well. I've found that $60K cars take $60K car parts, $60K car maintenance and $60K car insurance untill the day they go the crusher. There are alot of things that you can do on your own thanks to some of the DIY's on the interweb, manuals, etc. and many owners choose to do this. My job and personal obligations make it tough for me to spend a weekend doing maintenance, etc. the way I used to on my cars when I was younger, so I go to an independent BMW specialist that can handle anything with these cars. It costs some bread, but I'm addicted to the driving experience of the ///M3 and I assign the money to somewhat of a guilty pleasure cost in my mind. However, there are hi-po cars that are awesome that don't require a lot of maintenance like the Acura NSX's, MazdaSpeed, F-Sport, etc. that are lower in ownership costs that are fun too. You owe it to yourself and your finances to check them out just for giggles. Life is a set of compromises and you just have to evaluate what your wants and needs. This car is as expensive as I should own at this time in my life and I can live with this. Good luck with your evaluation and decision.

Thanks for the thoughtful post.
Maintenance on the M is not a problem, parts are a little pricier than toyota parts with my discount from BMW. Considering a CLS63 or E63 for a sedan. If maintenance is comparable to an M car then it is not a problem for me. I DIY everything myself. If an AMG constantly requires more attention(more services to be done, )etc than an M car if I would just go ahead and get an E60 M5 since maintenance on those is similar with the M3.

I've owned a SL600 before I traded it in for the M. Only owned the M a few hundred miles and nothin yet, knock on wood. The 600 on the other hand not so bad. Got one of my coils replaced at 28k miles. Engine misfire and lost all the power in the car. Cost was about $2500 parts+labor. After that pretty much everything was fine until about 46k miles. I notice some noise coming from the engine when the car was reving between 1500-4000 rpm. Also had my transmission slipping. So thats wen I got rid of the car. Mercedes couldnt figure out the problem. I had serviced the car every 3500 miles. Owned it since 5600 miles and 2 years. I didnt want something to happen down the road. All I can say looking back now I dont even miss it. I dont care that it was a benz roadster wit a v12 twin turbo. This M3 is so much fun from every aspect. Perfect everyday car to me so far. The only benz I would even consider would be the CLK63 Black but then again dont want to spend 90k at the moment. Straight line power ant for me nomore. I perfer to rip it threw those twisties. I believe thats what these M's are meant for. Sorry for the write up ant the best but hope it helps.
