...another question: can any knob that fits the 6speed fit the SMG? Does it have the same pull off, push on clipping setup?

yes, they use the same shift rod.

You can't replace the top portion. It's part of the knob.

i have the same RE shift knob and it kicks ass. love to taller look combined with my AS SSK.
