Default m3 turbo bad?

Is it bad if the e46 m3 gets a turbo kit? My friend might get one and i said no cause he wants to drag race it which i think is stupid cause most BMW's are track cars and shouldnt be used for drag and street racing. He just got and he sucks at shifting. He missed a gear and a stock volvo beat him....should he just get rid of it? imma probably going to show him the reply if its a bad idea.

It is not bad for your motor, the car handles the power nicely....it is actually bad for your wallet to be honest. I am running a turbo set up and I love the way it drives!!

Default Turbo - yes. Drag - maybe not.

There are a bunch of people on here who have gone the turbo route and most seem real happy with it. Search around for past posts; there are a bunch about the HorsepowerFreaks kits.

My understanding is that the e46 M3 isn't set-up all that well for drag racing though. People seem to have problems with the rear axle if they drag race a lot. Those problems will only be exaggerated if you crank up the power. As long as he's OK with that and factors it into his budget, then go for it. I haven't dragged mine much, so I can't really speak from experience. It does great on the track though.

HPF would be his best bet.

I wouldn't drag race an M3 whether it's turbo, NA, S/C or jet engine powered... Too many horror stories of this car's rear end having issues when the car has been launched over and over again...

Besides, you can spend $30K on a stage 2.5 turbo for this car, and you're still not going to break 10's at the strip... So honestly, what's the point?

The turbo kit has been proven to be solid, and reliable, and if you have the money, go for it...

In my HONEST opinion, all this car needs is the addition of another 100-150whp to make it all the more enjoyable. I've owned a 600rwhp Twin Turbo Z32, and I thought that car was fun to drive, then I bought the ///M and did a few important (to me) mods like suspension and the addition of a 4.10, and it was impossible not to smile every time I got behind the wheel and drove. Now I'm adding an AA stage 1.5 to the car to give it the power it "lacks" and I'm done with it...

Tell your friend to save his money and buy a Mustang if he wants a drag strip monster. Folks with this car have done it, but it's really not the car for straight line pedal mashing go fast....
