Default driver hits cyclist, flees scene, no jail time

a current topic amongst the cycling community
i decided to post a wall street journal reporting in order to make it neutral or at least not pro-cyclist

http://online.wsj.com/article/APd4aa...bfdcb4e2b.html

- motorist runs off road, hits cyclist
- cyclist injured on side of road, motorist keeps going
- pulls over in a parkign lot 3 miles away and calls MB dealership asking to fix mirror
- later says new car smell of his 2010 MB caused sleep apnea
- gets a suspended 90 day jail sentence

please discuss (maturely)

you forgot to mention the guy that hit the cyclist is a $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ hedge fund manager.

i've been following the story, the guy is a real dirt bag, it's a shame how much freedom = $$$$ in the justice system

what's the problem here? A cyclist hit my M3 and fled the scene with no jail time last year...

i didn't want to seem biased in my initial post

but yes the prosecution reduced the charge from a felony because they were afraid it would negatively affect his ability to keep his job position...

i really did think it was a joke when i read it.
btw since we're bringing up occupations the vicitm is a doctor (anasthesioligist i might be wrong though). they're pretty well paid doctors im kind of wondering if he isn't dissapointed in his lawyers right now

Erzinger's attorney said his client has a sleep disorder and dozed off.
How does this result in only a 1 year suspension of license. Should he ever be allowed behind the wheel?

did you or your m3 have spinal injuries, broken knee and arm, and bleeding in the brain after said incident?

No fine? So this guy got off easier at the end of the day than I did in Virginia for going 15 miles over the speed limit. Amazing.

I've almost been run over twice on my bike in the past week. Half the time it's because the drivers are just not looking out for bike riders.
