Default SMG needs need clutch

Hi there,

Recently when I've been driving around, during harder acceleration from stop in 1st or 2nd gear there would be a little jitter and then catch. The moment another person is in the car when accelerating from stop the jitter will be more pronounced. So is the case when I'm trying to go from stop on a hill, there will be lots of jitter like the clutch is trying to catch.

One more thing I wanna add to this is that it feels like my brakes are always slightly engaged. When I'm on my driveway my car used to roll back naturally and now it doesn't. Almost feels like the ebrake is always on but it's not. Maybe this has something to do with what I'm feeling with the SMG.

I have 70k on my odometer and I'm wondering when/if the clutch needs to be replaced in an SMG.

This phenonmenon happened here and there even when I first bought the car at 40k but it wasn't quite as bad as now when it would get worse if going uphill or if there was more weight in the car.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It is rare for an SMG to go that early on the clutch. Have you done a reset ie put car in N and hold both pedals back for 5-10 seconds while going at least 20-40?? I forget it is in the manual.

I would try that first, I would also look into a recalibration first. 70k is very low miles for a clutch in an SMG car.

same jitter on start in 1st gear happened to me at 55K and clutch and flywheel needed to be replaced. had a hell of a time getting them to reproduce it and then fix it under my (extended) warranty. stupid. clutch shouldn't go out that soon. never got a good answer why.

My 2003 with 118K does that sometimes when i drive it inside town for a long time, and when it rains so hard i get that jitter felling on the 1st gear, the 2 previous owners didn't mention anything about replacing a clutch neither the service record, that car is in a very good shape, any idea what it could be?

Lots of threads about this. It's the SMG shudder and many have had this issue

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=351940
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showt...d.php?t=307564

Do a search and you'll find many more. No real consensus on what causes the problem but it's a common one.

First off, fix your brakes, you likely have a caliper sticking; that could affect the clutch. The SMG "shudder" may be what you're feeling. Look at the links above, do a search, do the simple reset first, then maybe get the recalibrate done. But fix the brakes first.
