If I may step on a soapbox for a few....I am a master tech at a BMW dealer and have worked at same dealer for 10 years. I own and drive BMW's, love the product and very biased towards them. I don't normally frequent forums on a dailey/weekly basis. What frustrates me is all of the dealer (stealer) bashing. There are tech's/shops out there that rip off people, doesn't mean that all of these are dealers. I know several independents that are as much as the dealer if not more. We also get cars from independent shops that cannot fix the car and have to have us diagnosis it for them. If your getting such a great deal at an independent shop, it's possible you may be getting non-oem parts installed or having some rookie without a clue working on your car. Best advice I can give is to build a relationship with a service advisor/tech and have them work on your car everytime. Sure, it may be a little more expensive but you'll know the parts are oem and you'll have someone you know working on your car.

welcome to the forum good sir. your input is appreciated. i have to take up for my 'stealer' all the time... they have always priced better than the indys around town and yes i trust them with everything, except changing tires on my rims.... they seem to guarantee scratching it...

If 24 is good, then 25 must be better!

Theoretically, but not effictively. The engine needs to be dead cold, in the bay... not 'cooled down', not cold and then started and pulled around the lot and into the garage... cold. The dealer needs turnover in the garage bays to make money. A bay occupied by a car just sitting until it is stone cold is losing them money, ergo the advised practice of taking the car in the evening before, pulling in to the bay it will be worked on, and then doing the valve adjustment as the first job in the morning.

With that financial incentive to turn over bays as quickly as possible, do you really think they are adjusting the valves under the correct conditions as work instruction dictates?

precisely why I think it's a farce to even have them checked every 30k miles. If you hear them ticking more than usual at cold startup, that's when you check and adjust.

Valvetrain clearances can be out of spec without excessive ticking. Personally, I would want it addressed before an audible symptom of severely out of spec valvetrain clearances.
