Correct... And it is a personal preference for sure.

I'm very much willing to bet many dealerships and indy shops don't do the work they say they do in regards to checking valve clearances.

It MUST be left to cool overnight. If you dropped it off at 10, and they were doing it at 1, they adjusted them all out of spec.

Period. Fact. End of statement. You got fucked.

Nor would I go back, as they clearly have no idea what they're doing. Refund if possible, but not them touching it again.

And yes, there's only 24 shims.

I had that package as well with my initial purchase. Made me feel warm and fuzzy until I did my own valve adjustment at 55,000 miles. I still had the original valve cover gasket.

Came back to the dealer and found out their valve check consisted of "listening" for any loud valve ticks and adjust "if necessary." This was from the Service Manager's mouth. Even though the invoice clearly stated that valves were checked and shims replaced. I ended up getting my money back for the extended maintenance package after this fiasco. This was 2008.

Exactly. The dealer does not put their A+ mechanic on an antiquated M car in for maintenance. Sorry. Our 46M's get the secondary, acne laden just out of high school kid, not the 20+ year seasoned veteran for any scheduled or covered warranty maintenance work.

Just ask the E9X M guys who got their DCT system flushed with MTL fluid during their 1,200 mile maintenance how competent BMW's A+ mechanics are...

OP: glad you got your car back. I truly hope they adjusted your valves. 25 shims replaced sounds very fishy.... and $4,000 for that work is a crock of sh1t. As Ian stated, you got F'ed! I feel your pain buddy as I got F'ed by that same package myself.

Rofl I agree you got ****ed. Do you have carpet burn on your knees? I hear dealers like to do it doggy style. If things like this aren't incentive enough to learn to do things yourself I don't know what is.

At the very least go to an Indy. Extended warranty is a joke no techs want the work and it's done fast and shoved out the door. Fact.

No offence to the BMW tech but even if my best friend was a 20 year tech I wouldn't let him change my oil. My firm belief is that guys who do this everyday don't give a rats azz about details because it's just a job. Just like any job you learn to cut corners along the way. The biggest reason why I chose not to go down that road is because it's a hobby for me. Doing this work 10 hrs a day I wouldn't want to do more in my spare time. Fact is people don't put 110% when it isn't their own car.

F*** dealerships.

BMW dealers don't even do valve adjustments when you take your car in for inspection 2. They check off they did it but they don't even have the tools to do it. I know multiple techs at local BMW dealers.

I would find a shop that is experienced with inspection 2 and have them do it.

I don't get how BMW hasn't been in a lawsuit over it. Saying they do the valve adjustments and they really don't.

I wouldn't trust indy shops do them either. The only way I'm believing it is if I'm right there watching.

Depends on your indy!

I DIY all my own valve adjustments, but I have 100% confidence that if I took it to my indy they'd actually do it.
