Question Is a Schrick intake manifold a good upgrade?

I have a s52 m3 and wanted to go with an m50 intake manifold and was wondering if a schrick would be better than the m50? Thanks

a schrick manifold is a quality piece. It gives the benefits of the m50 manifold without the low end torque loss. Its the best of both worlds of the S50 and S52 manifolds.

The only reason not to get it would be the price.

I run the S50/M50 manifold on my S52, as do many people. It is available used for about $75. When installed on the larger displacement S52, the S52 still makes more torque everywhere in the power curve than the S50 and M50 engines on which BMW originally installed the manifold.

When the S52 was put into service in 1996 with the changeover to OBD2 and more strict emissions, a smaller intake manifold was used that kept air velocity higher for better atomization of the fuel and thus better emissions at lower rpm. One downside of this new intake manifold was that it choked top end power. Because of the larger displacement of the S52 and a couple of other changes like an improved exhaust manifold and midpipe, the S52 made the same power. Put the M50/S50 intake manifold on it, however, and it makes more like 255 rwhp than 240 rwhp.

The M50/S50 intake manifold outflows the Shrick manifold. The Shrick manifold is a compromise between bottom end and top end flow. I run the M50/S50 intake manifold. If I thought the Shrick was better, I would have bought one years ago. Other people's opinion of "better" may vary. I have never had any complaints about low end power on my 99M3 and the S50/M50 intake manifold has been on there since 2006. If I towed a boat or never exceeded 5000 rpm, I would just stick with the S52 intake manifold.

^^^
you also are turbo'd and have gobs of torque from that

The Schrick has more potential.

It can be extrude honed.
It has a ~79mm throttle body opening vs the S52 and S50 ~69mm.
It is tuned to give both low end torque and top end power.

It's a better piece than the M50 manifold. If you can afford it, get one.

This was the first mod I installed on my car, before the supercharger and turbo. Also, neither the supercharger nor the turbo improve bottom end power. The supercharger drags on the crank and makes the square root of peak boost at half peak rpm. The turbocharger drops compression to 8.5 or 9.0:1 and has to spool up before it makes boost.

The inexpensive M50/S50 manifold was loved by all when it was on the M50 and S50. Only people towing boats or short shifting their cars complain when their choked down anti-smog S52 manifold is swapped for the higher flowing M50/S50 manifold and they lose a little low end power in exchange for exactly the sort of power the S52 needs -- more top end power. And they complain even though power is greater everywhere in the curve than it was with the S50 in the 1995 M3.

But it is your money. Put the $1000 towards a set of Shrick cams to go with the M50/S50 intake manifold. When European Car tested Shrick cams with the S50/M50 intake manifold, they gained back much of the power traded and had even more top end power. You can read all about the advantages and disadvantages here:
