Yeah see I thought the crackling is from my tweeters... But upon putting my ear up to the door, it sounded like it was definitely the mids. Are the BSW mids plug and play just like the BSW tweeters? No modding or alternations required??

^I really need to get a set of those for the coupe. It still has the OE mids, GGGAAAKKKKK!!!! All my time and money has been going in to things improve autoX and nothing else. About time I did these, and I have the BSW tweets just sitting in a box.

It's too bad that all of the commonly-available/good head units (Except the featureless Nakamichis) look hideous in the E36 dash. The CD43 looks great, but nice ones usually sell for the price of a much better aftermarket unit with features like usb connectivity, bluetooth, etc.
Too bad there's not an all-black, flush-fitting, amber-lit aftermarket head that sounds good and has a few mandatory-in-2012 features. Anybody know of one?

You could go with a CD43 paired with a Dice MediaBridge, factory look with modern features, but it's an expensive setup.

I saw this Pioneer unit a while back and it is no too bad for a modern deck. It also has an amber/red backlight setting based on the photos I have seen. Not bad at all. No CD player but will hook up to just about anything.

I have a C43 with a dice iPod integration kit now, and it works pretty well.
With BSW door mids, it sounds OK enough for a 'vert, but I'm guessing that if I replaced the kick panel speakers and tweeters with any set of decent separates, and did the same with the rear side panel speakers, it would sound a lot better. All of the speakers except the door mids are 13 years old and were nothing great to begin with.
