I can agree. The total package and utility of the E46 M3 is tough to beat. Great performance and comfort with marginal compromise to either.

I still find myself wanting to get one again.

People who buy M3s usually like to do two things.

1) Use it as a daily driver. The E9x is more comfy and has more amenities -the adaptive headlights are fantastic for example; and the seats have to be the best ever put in a BMW.

2) Take it to the track; where the E9x's superior chassis is faster.

The E46 was the best of its time and still is a fantastic "all-arounder" even by today's standards. The E9x took it to the next level.

Harris addresses the e9X M3 very specifically in the video

Incorrect! He was referring to the advent of paddle shifters and how that's diluted the driving experience. Nothing to do with the E9x being a better/worse car. Try a manual E9x for size.

The E46 will always remain a sure fire classic in its abilities. However, the E9x just took those abilities and made it much much better. Last N/A singing that oh-so-symphonic tune of speed.

"The e92, in regards to it's fuel range and some of the things that it does with the steering, is worse than the e46. You could argue that it started the downward trend"

AKA, he's actually saying that the e9X M3 was the car started the downfall of sports cars

5:50 mark start.

Things he has on the short list of bad things:
poor steering feel
adjustable steering settings
adjustable suspension settings

the e46 m3 is bmw at its finest

-inline 6
-6sp
-locking differential
-utilitarian enough to take it to the supermarket, rip at 150mph on the autobahn, and do some wonderful lap times at the ring.

People forget just how impressive the E46 M3 was when it debuted in 2002, it was competitive with 911s, and many other sports car marquees, such as Ferrari.
