Running the recommended 225 17" square setup w/ Blizzaks. They work well until the snow gets 6"+ deep.

I had Blizzaks on my S class years ago - were awesome tires but I seem to remember the outside layer wore out fairly quickly, if I remember right. Most likely they are way better now, but that's why I avoid them.

Another excellent tire is the Michelin Pilot Alpin. I used them for 2 winters on the M3 when I was slightly further north. Down here in Carolina I can get away with anything.

Thanks for the info. I looked at tire rack and they don't have these in 18s. Do you know where I can buy them for my stock wheels (18x8 f, 18x9 r).

Try looking at Discount direct, they are great and offer free shipping. I've had a few different blizzaks and 2 hankook models for the CO winter commutes. Right now for winters I'm using the iCepts

I just called Discount Tire about the Hankook I*Cepts and they haven't carried 255/40/18 in the past, but do have the fronts (225/45/18). Are you using the stock staggered 18s during the winter, or did you you use a different size tire for the 18x9 rears?

I actually went with a bit different sizing that I thought would help for traction in the snow. 235/245 40 18s. I didn't have the stock 18s but I bought some spares in similar sizing just a bit lower offset. I was in a rush last winter and this setup turned out awesome, I have a 2+ hour commute in colorado weather

Good luck!

What are the smallest/narrowest tires that can be mounted to the rear 18x9 stock wheels? Looking for other tire size options as it seems that there are not too many dedicated snows that come in 255/40/18.
