I hate the cloud. We switched at work and it is ungodly slow. Cloud computing is worthless right now. Join google's cloud so they can data mine your information and sell it to the government to spy on you.

sounds like your company didn't implement it correctly or you have a slow connection speed. I don't understand why people hate on things that don't fully understand...

Notice the 'again' part. A good rule of cloud storage is don't store anything there you wouldn't trust Facebook with because you have about the same level of privacy.

Cloud has basically replaced the previous term 'hosted online' because unfortunately marketing people need new buzz words to latch on to.

Many 'cloud' services do not follow defined 'cloud' principles but they call themselves cloud services because you can't just say "hosted" any longer, you need to say 'cloud' so you appear to be hip and cool.

Really tragic.

True 'cloud' computing is about far more than just a hosted service, and even running a hosted service within a 'cloud' platform (e.g. Amazon EC2/EBS/S3, Openstack, Eucalyptus, Cloudstack, etc) might not mean you are actually delivering a real cloud computing service.

You may never know whether or not a hosted service is a real 'cloud' service until an outage occurs.

How redundant is the infrastructure behind the service? Does it's availability and integrity span beyond geographic boundaries? If a single datacenter goes down and that service goes offline, you aren't likely to be dealing with a real cloud -- just a hosted service, which might have some characteristics of a cloud but in reality it's the same shit that has been around for 20 years -- servers or small clusters of servers hosting applications and data for you to access on the internet.

Oh well. The word cloud has officially and entirely replaced 'hosted', I just have to get over it.

</Rant>

I store a lot of stuff on the Amazon S3 service. It is AES 256bit encrypted and my password is over 15 characters and uses every combination of character, numerals, and symbols. It should take over 18,000 years to brute force using today's most advanced techniques.

How is this as secure as Facebook?

How are passwords stored? Encrypted, hashed, or encoded? What algorithm? If hashed, salted? Who owns / has access to the keys, i.e. how does your data get encrypted and decrypted? What's their password recovery scheme?

These guys can throw all sorts of buzzwords at you as far as security but when the rubber hits the road most of them fall short. I've assessed a few of them I can't discuss but I would never store anything confidential in a so-called "cloud". I mean it's up to you, you have to ask what would happen if your data was stolen. For me the risk is too high. I need control over my own data.

Update on Dropbox's breach. Apparently they will have 2 factor now...

Only thing our company puts on Dropbox is non confidential images. Nothing worth stealing.

Q: What options do I have for encrypting data stored on Amazon S3?
You can choose to encrypt your data in Amazon S3 using Server Side Encryption (SSE) or using a client library like the Amazon S3 Encryption Client. Both enable you to protect sensitive data stored on Amazon S3. If you are using a client library, you retain control of keys used to encrypt. Some customers prefer this additional control of keys; others prefer not to incur the overhead required to manage and protect keys. If you are using SSE, AWS handles key management and key protection for you. You should choose SSE if you prefer AWS to manage your keys. SSE uses one of the strongest block ciphers available, 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256). 256-bit is the largest key size defined for AES. Both client side encryption and Server Side Encryption are supported for objects stored in Standard Storage and Reduced Redundancy Storage (RRS). For more information on using Amazon S3 Server Side Encryption, please refer to the topic on Using Server Side Encryption in the Amazon S3 Developer Guide.
