Default Advice with rear view mirror

Hey

Little story, was driving and my rear view mirror dropped off so there it was hanging held there by the rubber tubing around the wires.

It seemed that it was held together via some kind of bluetac, anyway tried to glue it back to the windscreen fitting but it wouldnt hold, so tried more tac but wouldnt hold then lost it and started gluing everything until the rubber seal kind of came off and wasnt able to be used.#

Anyway the windscreen fitting is a small circle and i ended up with a crack there, then as i managed to get the rear view mirror off to stop it from dangling there the crack went to about 3" below the windscreen fitting.

So trying to find out if i can get away with just ordering a new rear view mirror from BMW and getting them to fix it or would i need a new windscreen considering the windscreen fitting is stuck to the windscreen.

By the way its 98 E36 convertible.

:o)

I have never been in an E36 with the autodim feature.

As for the attaching back to the glass:

Theres a metal mount that is glued to the glass first, then the mirror is attached to that. You need a special kind of glue that is deigned to bond metal to glass or the mount will not stay in place and the mirror will fall off the glass when you reattach it to the mount. Also, the metal peice has to be glued in the correct location on the windshield, and it a certain direction. If you do not glue the metal peice on the glass correctly the mirror may mount crooked when you reattach the mirror to the mount. (Getting this mount off after the glue dries can be extrememly difficult and could result in you breaking the glass while trying to extract the mount)

I recommend you take you car to a regular glass shop and ask them to reattach the mirror to the window.

Ahh brilliant.

Getting the new windscreen in the morning after i get myself a new auto dim rear view mirror.
BMW must know what special glue is used, hopefully they can do it ;o)

I thought the auto dim rear view mirror was standard, i know my E36 has every extra fitted so maybe the auto dim thing was a extra.

Thanx for your reply.

My mirror and mount fell of today while hardwiring my valentine one to the dome light. No wires to my mirror though. Now I have to figure out how to get the mirror off the mount so i can gkue it back on...
