Tranny
oem BMW LTF-1 83 229 408 942 Esso/Exxon MTF-LT-1
superceded by LTF-2 Castrol MTF-2
1.7 Lt/3.6 Pt

tech specs:
fully synthetic gear oil
75W-80
API GL4
MIL-L-2105

another BMW approved is Aral SNS-B SAE 75W80

ATF is too thin, and the Royal Purple gear oil is similar to ATF
the Redline MTL is rated 75W80/GL4, so it meets the spec http://www.redlineoil.com/whitePaper/13.pdf

Diff
BMW 83 221 470 080 (large container)/83 221 467 993(small) special gear oil
oem Castrol SAF-XJ 75W-140
1.2 Lt/2.6 Pt
API 75W140 GL5+LS

this is a special, fully synthetic 75W-140 gear oil with special additives for the locking limited slip, oil without these modifiers would not be appropriate and should NOT be used

the only other oil I could find approved by BMW is Aral BS-LSX SAE 75W140

So Art, which would you recommend from the Redline series?

I'm using the MTL in the tranny...it meets factory spec...and after 50k miles 0 problems...

and the oem in the diff, but if I could find a fully synthetic 75W/140 GL5+ I would use it...it's the spec, and in Europe I believe there are others, Aral for one, that are spec'ed...

Valvoline makes a fully synthetic 75W/140 GL5+ (w/LS designation, iirc that's what the + means) that I THINK is approved in europe by BMW...

So I guess for the mantrans I should be using either:

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...RODUCT_ID=MT90

or

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...PRODUCT_ID=MTL

And for the Diff Oil, the OEM oil with FM booster...

or the redline version:

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...DUCT_ID=75/140

they also seem to sell a 75/90 with FM
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...ODUCT_ID=75/90

Redline diff oil is ok..

But, for D4-ATF, it is NOT good for a Getrag 6 speed transmission.. It was nothing short of the worst nightmare one can possibly have...

Go ask supra tt owners about how many Getrag 6spds did D4-ATF kill.. It was a major disaster, the symptom was anywhere from (minor) cold centering problem to (major) total tranny replacement.

Damn Redline actually recommended ATF-D4 for supra tt 6spds at the time.. When the problem occurred, they refused to acknowledge ever recommending ATF-D4... and of course, refuse to pay any kind of damage they caused..

F them....

i'd say stick with OEM stuff,,, redline stuff is not an upgrade, they are a marketing company that knows how to promote their stuff..

The "crunch" I'd sometimes feel when shifting when the motor/tranny was cold is gone. Completely gone. Usually this was from 1-2 or 2-3. Shifts are consistently smooth now.

Straight from Turner Motorsports

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...ODUCT_ID=ATFD4

Red Line Synthetic D4 ATF
Synthetic D4 ATF is suitable for use where Dexron III, Dexron II, or Mercon fluids are recommended. BMW recommends ATF oil in all manual transmission in cars produced 1/1995 and later. The D4 ATF provides significantly improved gear protection. The balanced frictional characteristics provides smooth and consistent shifts for extended drain intervals. The superior stability compared to petroleum ATFs allows high-temperature operation without varnishing valves and clutches which leads to transmission failure.

I have also been suggested to run D4-ATF (which I have on order) and 75W90 No Slip

My question is what's hte difference between 75W90NS and 75W90??? One doesn't contain the friction modifiers for limited-slip hypoid diffs... what does that mean for us M3 owners???

it's NOT recommended for the e46 M3, I gave the specs above, gear oil 75W/80 GL4...my e36 M3 used ATF...the car will have a sticker on it...the e46 M3 does NOT...

the rear takes 75W140, 75W90 is too light the NS is for locking diffs, not limited slip, iirc...don't use this...

I have the BMW documents for the tranny and diff, they are PDF files...I'll email to someone who'll post them

Redline does make a 75w-140 GL-5

Quote:
Our 75W140 gear oil is a GL-5 rated product recommended for street-driven road car differentials where that viscosity is specified, providing excellent performance in both conventional and limited slip units. Popular in late-model Ford truck rear differentials as well as many other common models.
I've used Redline in the past w/o any problems (just changed the SE-R yesterday w/ MT-90), but for the M3, I think I'll stick w/ factory BMW fluid. The thing that bugs me is that Redline's site is careful to say that it meets (or exceeds) API specification, but nowhere does it say that their fluids are API certified. This was first brought to my attention in this thread. Lscman sounds like a very knowledgeable guy.

EDIT: Just saw your comments on the GL-5+LS flavor. Redline has 75w-140 and 75w-140NS -- I'm thinking the 75w-140 would satisfy the the GL-5+LS flavor.
