Default known M3 faults?

hi all

i'm about to trade an '01 E39 M5 for an E46 M3 conv with SMG (both UK spec).

this is due to the M5 developing various engine problems (uncurable even under BMW extended warranty).

i know that 10/01 - 2/02 US cars were subject to recall but i was hoping that someone may know or have a link to all problems/recalls affecting the M3 as i don't want to have similar problems to the M5.

cheers

lore

Well it depends what year M3 you are talking about. There has been a SMG recall and a rod bearing recall since the E46 M3 was introduced. There may have been more but none that come to mind.

Engine recall as Mentioned. A few other issues to look out for are (not recalls though) SMG pump failures. (although alot seem to be just relay related) The odd few vanos failures (most are e36 evo related not e46) smaller common problems are broken rear springs, RTAB wear. Window regulators. Alternators. Wishbone/Ball joints. Im sure there are a few more but most are just wear and tear and some of the other issues highlighted are probably not as common as a enthusiast's forum would highlight. Alot of people only tend to post when they have problems and need advice.

Do your research, as you are.

(read the stickies on this forum, especially this one
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=189390 ).

Any other questions, search the board, odds are it's been covered. The Mad Russian is good for some base knowledge as well.

Good luck!

Also add coil packs as a common problem with early production M3's. There was an updated part made and I think a service bulletin for those with the problem. I had it on my '02 M3.
