Default How lame am I???

Ok, I did my RSM's about 6-8 months ago, no prob except when I reattached one or my shocks to the wheel, I had it turned around the wrong way and the bolt worked it's way out. I caught it before it came off, turned the shoch around, and all was well. The tek that I used indicated that I should tighten this bolt to 12 ft.lbs. My torque wrench didn't go that low, so I just guessed. I heard the famillar sound last night, kind of a rattling coming from the rear wheel in question when I hit bumps. I figured that I'd take a look this morning. OMFG the shock is completely seperated from the wheel, just hanging there. It appears that the bolt is still there and it's no big deal to fix, but is there something I should do to keep the bolt in, locktite or something like that. I'm pretty sure I gave it more than 12 ft.lbs when I tightened it last time, does anyone know if that spec is off? Is there supposed to be a washer between the shock and where it mounts to the wheel?

12 sounds mighty loose. i have taken mine out a few times and always go pretty tight. try some blue loc tite... green if you never want the damn thing to come out again. but be careful.. the control arm is aluminum.

Based on this link:

http://www.logun.org/suspen.htm

I would say that the proper specs on the lower rear shock is 57ft/lb

I will state that nearly all aftermarket RSMs are 24Nm at the attachment of the RSM to the Body, Approximately 16 Nm for the damper to the RSM and BMW recommended 100Nm at the shock to hub (way overboard in my opinion as its a non torque critical fastener, I generally tighten to 50Nm). EMail me if you want other critical suspension torque values.

BTW, also suggest using double wide washers just as a preventative measure on the lower mount....

Yes, they are not as nice as the LTW's. Maybe I am getting old, but the cushy sidwalls, quite road noise, and softer ride are a nice break. :nixweiss:

hey everyone, thank you for the info. I went 60 Ft.lbs when I put it back in a few minutes ago. I didn't have any locktite handy, and it was just dumb luck that I had any tools with me at all. I'll squirt some in when I get home. I'm guessing that the tek I used, not the one listed above had a typo, or more likely, I misread it. Amazing that I drove at least a little bit with no shock and didn't notice or Fxxk anything up.

Right now I'm driving the gf's Accord. It has the vaguest steering ever, and not a lot of power, but boy is it relaxing. It's like sitting on my couch compared to driving my M.

I think we all forget how engaging the M is compared to most cars.
